HALF DAY TRIP
Join NC Outdoor Adventures as we hike the Appalachian Trail through a Spruce Forest up onto one of NC's most beautiful Balds, Roan Mountain. This is the highest point of the Unaka Mountain Range where weather and temps can change on a dime. Along the hike your guide will provide you with unique plant and history facts about the area!
Winter hikes on the Roan can be very cold, windy and slippery and can result in injury without proper preparations. For safety all guests will be provided with yaktrax, a friction device that attaches to boots and is used to keep you from slipping on ice or snow. Participants should expect a minimum of a 3-mile moderate hike to view the Balds.
After the hike we will return to the Toe River Adventure Outpost for a campfire complete with a hot Brunswick Stew dinner with cast iron skillet corn bread followed by smores or banana boats for dessert. BYOB your favorite beverage for after the hike. Guests who are vegetarians or have food allergies should reach out to us prior to their trip date for options.
New Year's Eve guests will see a trip cost increase as NCOA will be serving a traditional dinner around a campfire of greens, black eyes peas, flat iron cornbread and BBQ.
Important notes: dress for cold weather, gloves and hat, wear layers, wear good hiking boots with warm socks. DO NOT WEAR ANYTHING COTTON! In the rescue world we call cotton worn in winter death cloth as once it is wet it stays wet and increases chances of hypothermia. Wool layers are best and even stay warm when wet!
Please bring a backpack for hands free hiking. Eat before the hike or bring snacks along with water. Important Note: water bottles should be insulated and will freeze if the bottle is not insulated. We recommend folks that have knee issues or problems with walking please bring hiking poles or a walking stick.
Don’t forget to pack a camp chair for the campfire lunch and dessert after the hike at the NCOA Outpost along the Toe River. It will be getting dark early at the Outpost in the holler, so we suggest brining a headlamp for the campfire dinner and dessert. We also sell them in the Outpost.
