You might be wondering why NC Outdoor Adventures decided to create community swim days. As a company who operates daily on the Toe River we frequently see and meet folks who are unable to swim recreating on the river, most always without a personal floatation device, PFD. Both my husband and I are part of our counties swift water rescue team and we know firsthand how deadly this combination can be. It only takes a few seconds for an accident to happen in water. If the incident includes a group of people who do not know how to swim, a single victim can quickly become several as others enter the water to try and save another person. NC Outdoor Adventures would like to tackle this concern head on by offering a to teach individuals in our community (Yancey and Mitchell Counties) to swim! All ages welcome. Swim lessons will take place at the Red Hill Swim Hole. Participants must be Yancey or Mitchell Country residents.
At this time, I would like to ask for volunteers and community support from our county officials, chambers and EDC’s to help make this event successful. Our biggest need is volunteers with experience in teaching others to swim plus a bit of help illustrating the importance of safety around our waterways. NC Outdoor Adventures will be purchasing some items to help teach swimming including, kick boards, pool noodles and of course we will supply life vests if needed, however the key to this is to learn to swim without a PFD. Any assistance or donations towards the purchasing of said equipment would be greatly appreciated.
